THE DAY
I am sorry that this morning I did forget
Today’s the day when first we did beget
In both of us a new if not untroubled life,
The day you graciously became my wife,
When we began what at last we know,
A life entirely ours undistracted now
By all the pointless paths that once I took
Looking where I had no cause to look;
And if now we are closer to our ending
I think we have largely done the mending
Of all the unhappy damage I have done,
And yet may be what we would become.
