INGLESHAM CHURCH AND OTHER POEMS

ENVOI

Do you not feel yourself drawn with the expectation
and desire of some Great Thing?
     Thomas Traherne.

Should these few poems be my last, and you
Not find in them the world you want
Nor the world unknown we all imagine ours
Do not think I would have ended here, had not
Some kind of death undone what I began.
Think instead of what I have not found—
Those imperfect ways of thought and feeling
Now at work in me, undiscovered, unexamined,
Preventing the world I would call ours.
And then if prayer is possible for you
Pray this uncreated world be found,
And made—by someone else. In such work
I would willingly learn to find my own
If living my life must fail.
                                             In that world
Always immanent, let there be rest
For the making spirit unmade.
